HSRM Invitation - English for international academic communication (online course)

Dear partner,

Warm greetings from the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences!

We would like to invite your academic staff to attend an online workshop entitled “English for international academic communication” on August 10th and 11th, 2023. In this course, academic staff will improve the ability to engage in interdisciplinary and intercultural online exchanges, understand conversational partners on academic topics beyond their own specialist area, and explain familiar academic topics to a recipient who does not have specialist knowledge.

The workshop is free of charge and open to all academic staff. Please be aware that the number of places available is limited and that registration will close on July 27th. If you have any questions regarding the course, please do not hesitate to contact the coach, Dr. Shirley Roth.

English for international academic communication

Do you want to feel more confident when participating in international workshops and conferences?  Would you like to practice for this situation in an online setting that is facilitated by a language trainer? 

You will spend two mornings exchanging ideas with other participants and perfecting a presentation on your chosen topic.  You will receive language feedback and develop your ability to clarify and avoid misunderstandings.

This course will be advertised to HSRM partner universities and therefore provides a realistic simulation of international academic exchange. Come and join us!

Course Objectives:

You will improve your ability to engage in interdisciplinary and intercultural online exchanges with other academics, linking your contributions to those of others, and reacting appropriately work collaboratively with academics from different backgrounds (universities, countries, language competences) creating a positive atmosphere understand conversational partners on academic topics beyond your own specialist area, confirming details as necessary explain familiar academic topics, making it accessible for a recipient who does not have specialist knowledge facilitate discussion of academic topics, confirming comprehension, inviting others in, asking for elaboration etc. create a clear, systematically developed presentation, with highlighting of significant points, and relevant supporting detail.

When: 10 & 11 August from 9:00 until 12:30 CEST on both days

Where: online (using a combination of Webex and a Miroboard)

Language Level: Participants at B2 level or above will benefit most from this course.
