By Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 780 of November 22, 2024, the head of the Department of History of Ukraine, Professor Oleksandr Dobrzhanskyi, as part of a team of scientists from Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv, was recognized with the 2024 Borys Paton National Prize of Ukraine in the field of social sciences and humanities for the comprehensive scientific study "Ukraine Cathedral in Struggle for state independence 1917–1923".

The award was a recognition of the high scientific achievements of the team in the development of the problems of the Ukrainian revolution in the western Ukrainian lands, the formation of the idea of universality and its implementation in the struggle for an independent Ukrainian state. In the studies of the award winners, the process of inclusion of Galicia, Bukovyna and Transcarpathia into the cathedral Ukrainian People's Republic has been highlighted and substantiated. The prerequisites and causes of the Ukrainian revolution are analyzed, the nationwide scope of the liberation struggle of Ukrainians for their own state is presented, the experience of the formation of authorities and self-government, the main directions of domestic and foreign policy are characterized, and the biographies of the most famous Ukrainian public-political, cultural, religious, and military figures are highlighted.

As stated on the website of the Borys Paton National Prize Committee: "The authors proved that the Ukrainian-centric concept of the history of our people in 1917-1923 became the key to the formation of Ukrainian statehood in Galicia, Bukovyna and Transcarpathia after the collapse of Austria-Hungary, and the ideas of the unity of Ukraine to this day remain a political ideal for the majority of our citizens, a symbol of Ukrainian statehood and victory, especially in the conditions of full-scale Russian aggression against Ukraine."

Among the most important achievements of the team was the publication of a number of individual and collective monographs, collections of documents, and the encyclopedia "Western Ukrainian People's Republic 1917–1923" in 4 volumes, holding a series of international scientific conferences devoted to this problem.
