In the first 3 days of the war, to unite the efforts of employees, teachers and students, the Volunteer Headquarters of the University was formed, the main task of which was to help IDPs living in university dormitories, employees, students and relatives of employees who are currently defending Ukraine on the battlefield.

Thanks to the partnership relations of CHNU with many universities of other countries and the active international activities of the university, starting from March 2022, our university received about 600 tons of humanitarian cargo, which was distributed among IDPs living in the dormitories of our university and in communities of Bukovyna, military units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Among the largest donors of humanitarian aid, the following institutes should be mentioned:

  • The Institute for German Culture and History of Southeastern Europe (Germany) and its director, Florian Kührer-Wielach, who initiated the collection of charitable contributions for the purchase of humanitarian aid and attracted about 300,000 euros, which was the lion's share of all humanitarian aid that reached our university;
  • NGO Romanian Peace Institute "PATRIR" (Romania);
  • Stefan cel Mare University of Suceava;
  • Public organization JUH (Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe) (Germany);
  • Society Radivci (Romania);
  • Halle University Clinic (Germany);
  • Volunteer ambulance service (Romania) and others.

There are rare cases when teachers from European universities showed a private initiative to provide humanitarian aid to the Ukrainian people through Chernivtsi University.

CHNU responded to the request for help, or took the initiative to provide humanitarian aid to such institutions of higher education of Ukraine, which suffered as a result of military operations and are in dire need of support:

  • Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv;
  • V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University;
  • Sumy State University;
  • National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute”;
  • I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

The unity of our university community is touching. Voluntary work was active throughout the war at each of the faculties and educational and scientific institutes. Everyone, by virtue of their capabilities and skills, joins the joint struggle against the Russian invader:

  • students and teachers were involved in the translation of news subtitles on one of the leading German TV channels into Ukrainian;
  • there is a systematic weaving of camouflage nets and "chimeras" for military personnel. In total, more than 100 camouflage nets have been prepared;
  • during the war, dozens of charitable creative events were organized, the purpose of which was to raise funds for the support of the Armed Forces. The Centre for Culture and Leisure (CCL) was active here, and during the war, they held about 20 charity concerts at which more than UAH 500,000 were collected. for the purchase of military ammunition for defenders of Ukraine;
  • targeted fund-raising and procurement are systematically carried out to cover the urgent needs of the military (including for students and teachers who are on the front lines). Among the most urgent needs: medicine, underwear, warm clothes, hygiene products, military equipment, drones, rangefinders, thermal imagers, walkie-talkies, food products, etc.;
  • teachers, employees and students are actively involved in collecting and sorting clothes and household items for IDPs, unloading and sorting other humanitarian aid at most volunteer points in Chernivtsi;
  • the collection of materials for the manufacture of trench candles was carried out, which is also a sought-after attribute at the front;
  • when, in the first days of the war, IDPs began to arrive at the university dormitories, rooms for their occupancy were prepared by the efforts of students-volunteers, and later shelter in dormitories;
  • the student and teaching teams of the faculties and educational institutes purchased and transferred to the units of the Armed Forces several drones, thermal imagers, funds were collected for the restoration of 2 combat vehicles of the infantry of the military department of the CHNU;
  • the academic community of the university is also involved in the psychological adaptation of IDPs, actively involving both adults and children;
  • teachers and employees of the university make and send to the front homemade canned meat for military food and much more.

There is systematic support for employees, their relatives and students of the university who are in defence of the independence of Ukraine. The volunteer staff of the university, thanks to the efforts of the International Office of the university and the Center for German-language studies Gedankendah, carry out individual equipment of a military serviceman, form and send packages with food products, individual hygiene products, medicines, etc.

Organized 24-hour duty of volunteers in 2 dormitories where IDPs live. The volunteers worked in three shifts for the first six months. Their main task was help with settlement, and later – organization of comfortable living conditions for residents in dormitories No. 5 and 6.

In general, over a year of work, more than 70 students were part of the Volunteer Staff. As of the end of November – about 20 people.

The volunteer staff of CHNU has always actively supported and will continue to support IDPs living in university dormitories.

In particular:

  • Permanent channels of communication with the residents of hostels No. 5 and 6 have been established through messengers, which allows you to quickly convey any information and receive feedback.
  • Teams of hostel volunteers organized round-the-clock duty to help and support IDPs. Volunteers helped with the settlement, adjusted the daily life of the residents and always responded to the wishes and appeals of the residents.
  • For 5 months, daily (Monday-Friday) free dinners were provided for residents of the dormitories of our university. This took place within the framework of cooperation with the international charitable organization World Central Kitchen.
  • For 30 days, thanks to the efforts of the Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development (ACTED) and the Volunteer Defenсe Headquarters of Ukraine, about 100 children living in the hostels of CHNU received free lunches.
  • Thanks to the international partners of our university, food kits are distributed weekly to IDPs living in our dormitories. Each package contains at least 7 units of food or personal hygiene products. Since the beginning of the war, more than 7,000 food packages have been distributed.
  • Every day, dormitory residents have the opportunity to contact the volunteer room for help (hygiene products for adults and children, washing powder, baby food, etc.)
  • With the efforts of university employees and other volunteer organizations of the region, recreational and educational and sports events are actively organized for children living in university dormitories.
  • Coolers with free water and new washing machines have been installed for the comfort of the hostel residents, with the support of volunteer organizations.
  • With the assistance of our employees, the partner organization of CHNU from Italy provided a one-time financial assistance to families living in CHNU dormitories in the amount of 75 EUR per person.
