On August 8, on Yuriy Fedkovych's 190th birthday, students, staff, teachers, deans, directors, and vice-rectors of Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University honoured the memory of the great Bukovynian by laying flowers at his monument. The event began with a minute of silence for the fallen heroes of Ukraine.
The laying of flowers at the monument to Yuriy Fedkovych is an annual tradition that unites the university community around the ideas of patriotism, preservation of cultural heritage and respect for prominent figures of the Motherland. Such gatherings emphasize the importance of unity around common values, honouring the cultural heritage and memory of those who left an indelible mark on the history of Ukraine.
Traditionally, during the celebrations honouring Yuriy Fedkovych, the awarding of the Yuriy Fedkovych Prize – the Bukovyna enlightener took place.
Employees of Chernivtsi university were among the laureates:
- Alla Antofiichuk, Associate Professor of the Department of Modern Ukrainian Language, Candidate of Philology, member of the Board of the Chernivtsi Regional Association "Prosvita";
- Vasyl Kostyk, Associate Professor of the Department of Ukrainian Literature, PhD in Philology;
- Heorhii Filipchuk, academician of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, Professor, Honorary Doctor of Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University.
The university community is proud that Chernivtsi university was named after Yuriy Fedkovych in 1989.
