On 21 May, Chernivtsi celebrated the 20th anniversary of Vyshyvanka Day on a grand scale - a festival that originated within the walls of Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University and, over the course of two decades, has become an international symbol of Ukrainian identity. The celebrations took place in the main building of Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University and at the Faculty of History, Political Science and International Relations, and involved all the university’s faculties and institutes.
The festive programme combined artistic performances, embroidered shirt displays, a charity fair and a fundraising drive for soldier Oleksandr Pavlov. Participants honoured the memory of Ukraine’s fallen defenders with a minute’s silence. Creative groups from the university and the city performed on stage, with Pavlo Dvorskii and his sons appearing as special guests.
At the Faculty of History, where the idea for the festival was conceived 20 years ago, meetings were held with the co-founders of Vyshyvanka Day - Lesia Voroniuk, Serhii Bostan and Oksana Dobrzhanska. A particularly memorable moment was the presentation of a Bukovinian vyshyvanka to David Titov, a student from the Donetsk region, as a symbol of Ukraine’s unity.
Participants in the event emphasised that today the vyshyvanka is not only an element of traditional dress, but also a symbol of remembrance, freedom, resilience and national dignity.
