The renovated Marble Hall of Chernivtsi National University is open again after restoration

On September 22th the Grand opening of the renovated Marble Hall which had been given a new lease of life in Chernivtsy National University named after Yuriy Fedkovych was held. It is nice to indicate the participation of former rectors of the university, professors Stepan Melnychuck and Roman Petryshyn, who have already made a contribution to preserving the propper state of former Residence of the metropolitans of Bukovina and Dalmatia, and have shared their memories. Ruslan Bilokursky, the rector, expressed his gratitude to U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, professional restorers, and university team for the high-quality, scientifically, and technically correct restoration of the ceiling, vault, and arches of the Marble Hall support.

The restoration of ceiling, vaults, and arches was provided with the grant funds from U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation. During 23 years the Fund founded in 2002 has managed to support about 1000 restoration projects in 130 countries all over the world. More than $1.7 millions were invested to 18 Ukrainian cultural heritage restoration sites. The largest projects are restoration of The Old Academic Building of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and the Marble Hall of the Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University.

In 2020 the project group, consisting of the project coordinator, Professor Tamara Marusyk (now the head of the UNESCO Site Management Center), the head of the Department of Architecture, Urbanism and Preservation of UNESCO Sites, Doctor of Architecture Iryna Korotun, Chief Accountant Yuriy Romaniv, and a specialist from the Department of Humanitarian Education and Training Oksana Golubenko, submitted the first application for participation in the competition, but due to pandemic restrictions, the US Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Heritage Preservation did not consider the submitted applications. The following year, a new application was submitted and out of 80 projects that participated in the competition, only 10 projects were selected for the second round. The university team won the competition under the Foundation's Program and the university received a grant of 363 thousand dollars.

In September 2021 US ChargĂ© d'Affaire ai Christina Quinn payed an official visit to the University. During the ceremonial academy held in the Red Hall of the university, rector Roman Petryshyn signed the grant agreement on implementation of the specified project.

Though the full-scale russian invasion of Ukraine suspended implementation of the project. Thankfully to the effective communication and U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation employee support was extended to 2024-2025. After its prolongation the procedure that precedes the implementation of restoration work was restarted: coordination and expertise of project documentation and estimate, tender announcement, announcement of the winner, permission of the Department of Education and Science, and strategic communication of Ukraine for the execution of work.

The restoration work lasted half a year and was finished at the beginning of September. Ceiling, vaults, and arches of the second floor of the Marble Hall brighten up and regain as a feast for the eyes of teachers and students, excursionists and visitors of the university, of everyone who considers the cultural heritage of Ukraine to be important.

Significant for academical community and university students took place a week before the grand anniversary of the university, which will be celebrating 150 years from its foundation day. Despite the change of government (Austrian, Rumanian, Soviet Union, and finally of independent Ukrainian) the University has never lost its national belonging: it was, it is, it will remain as the cultural, spiritual, and educational centre not only for Bukovina, but for Ukraine. Especially the University gave that European charm to the city, of which planty of citizens' generations are proud.

No doubt, uniqueness and attractiveness of Chernivtsy National University named after Yuriy Fedkovych (the former Residence of the metropolitans of Bukovina and Dalmatia), which is also UNESCO Worldwide heritage object, contributes to Ukraine image enhancement and serves as one of the tools for cultural policy.
