On December 17, a “Christmas Customs Studio: the Creation of Ornaments and Motanka Dolls” workshop was run at Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University’s main building, organised by the Trade Union of CHNU Professors and Staff jointly with the Museum of Ethnography and Ancient History.

Over 10 individuals took part in the event, and among them were professors, university’s staff, and everyone who volunteered, interested in Ukrainian traditions and folk art. United by a friendly, warming atmosphere, the participants had the chance to create their own festive Christmas ornaments and traditional Motanka dolls.

During the workshop, those present found out more about the symbolism behind Motankas, their importance as a miraculous guard against evil spirits, the specifics of making them, and Ukrainian Christmas traditions. The event facilitates more than just the development of creative skills – it encourages us to deepen the knowledge of the cultural heritage of our ancestors.

The participants sincerely thanked the organisers for the fascinating and detailed event, pointing out the high level of preparedness, the positive impression it’d made on them, and the true Christmas mood they felt afterwards.

The event became a success and contributed to the popularisation of Ukrainian traditions by creating a warming, inspiring atmosphere and the anticipation of winter holidays.
