Erasmus+ Days in ChNU: opportunities and challenges of international academic mobility

An event dedicated to opportunities for international academic mobility, the Erasmus+ programme, and challenges faced by international exchanges participants was held in Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University as part of the international initiative Erasmus+ Days.

The event started with a welcoming speech by Yurii Bohdanovych Khalavka, vice-rector for scientific work, who also shared his personal experience of participating in the Erasmus+ programme. Sofiia Matushak, expert of the International Office, held a substantial lecture on academic mobility programmes, their prospects, and nuances of participation.

The event’s important part was a panel discussion featuring Oksana Hrytsiuk, Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University graduate, ESN Chernivtsi volunteer, and two-time participant of academic exchange programmes; Vitalii Yaremchuk, PhD in International Law, Teaching Assistant of the Department of International Law and Comparative Law of Yuriy Fedkovych CHNU, participant of short-term mobility programmes and Staff Mobility; Ivanna Makukh-Fedorkova, Candidate of Political Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of International Relations and Public Communications, and coordinator of EU Information Centre.

The speakers shared their personal experiences of international mobility, talked about opportunities for professional and academic development, and discussed some challenges which the exchange programmes participants may face.

Special attention was driven to Eurodesk and Young European Ambassadors – European informational networks helping the youth find opportunities for education, volunteering, internships, and personal development. Representatives of Eurodesk and Young European Ambassadors introduced the participants to available resources and tools for searching for global opportunities.

The practical stage of the event took part in a World Café format, where participants were working in groups, discussing the main barriers and challenges of international mobility, searching for ways of combatting them together, and exchanging thoughts.

The event became a stage for an open dialogue among students, the University’s representatives, and youth organisations. It endorsed the spread of information on global opportunities and encouraged the youth to participate in academic mobility programmes.

The event was organised thanks to the partnership between a non-governmental organization Erasmus Student Network Chernivtsi, the University’s International Office, and the Student Parliament of the Faculty of History, Political Science and International Relations.

Erasmus+ Days was an opportunity to remind everyone again that international mobility is not just an opportunity for studying abroad, but also the path to new knowledge, intercultural dialogue, and professional growth.
