On 25 and 28 April, as part of the educational and awareness-raising project "Weekend University Day 2026", another series of engaging and informative sessions took place for pupils in years 9–11 who wish to learn more about studying at Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University.
This time, project participants had the opportunity to visit the following departments: the Institute of Biology, Chemistry and Bioresources, the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, the Faculty of Law, and the Faculty of Physical Education, Sport and Rehabilitation, where they were treated to interactive sessions, meetings with lecturers and students, and practical experience in various fields.
At the Educational and Research Institute of Biology, Chemistry and Bioresources, an engaging programme was prepared for the "Weekend University Day" students: presentations by the departments, demonstrations of chemical experiments and the chance to try out their practical applications for themselves. Determining the acidity of various products proved particularly interesting, allowing participants to feel like real researchers. The atmosphere was enhanced by mini-quizzes and an interactive "anti-lecture" in the form of a team game, where the most active participants received prizes. Participants were also given a tour of the lecture theatres, shown visual aids and given a detailed account of the teaching and research activities.
At the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, participants began the meeting with a tour of the department and the building, followed by a discussion with the Dean of the Faculty. Students shared their own experiences of participating in various projects, talked about student life, and discussed opportunities for development and bringing their own ideas to fruition. In particular, the participants learnt about creating their own gaming platform and attended a mini-lecture on STEM-education. Special attention was paid to modern technologies: the use of robots in medicine, education and other fields, as well as 3D printing. The school pupils were shown how printed models can be applied, particularly in developments for veterans.
Next, a meeting was held at the Faculty of Law. Here, participants were introduced to the faculty’s structure, study opportunities and future career prospects in this field. To provide a better understanding of the educational process, a mini-simulation of a lecture was organised, during which participants were able to experience the atmosphere of a real university lecture and even join in the discussion.
The Faculty of Law also invited the school pupils to immerse themselves in the world of law: participants learnt about the features of Ukraine’s legal system, the key principles of how legislation works, and the role of a lawyer in modern society. The interactive part of the event proved particularly interesting — a simulated criminal investigation, during which the school pupils had the opportunity to try their hand at being investigators, analyse facts, put forward theories and identify logical connections. This format helped them to better understand the practical side of the legal profession.
The Faculty of Physical Education, Sport and Rehabilitation had organised a range of activities for the participants. First of all, the Dean of the Faculty and the heads of departments introduced the students to the study programmes and career opportunities. Next, participants enjoyed a variety of games on the football pitch (cornhole, volleyball, football, neuro-skipping, games from around the world, etc.). This was followed by two energetic fitness sessions with lively music and enthusiastic student trainers. To conclude, the pupils were shown the classrooms and equipment used to aid the rehabilitation of people with disabilities. Those who wished were able to experience for themselves the difficult process of moving around with the aid of special aids and the importance of rehabilitation equipment and training.
The latest meeting as part of the project served as a shining example of just how fascinating and enriching an introduction to university life can be. It provided participants with new knowledge, practical experience and inspiration for their future career choices.
