On 12–13 August, Chernivtsi hosted a meeting of the rectors of the universities that are members of the Alliance of Ukrainian Universities. Over the course of two days, they worked alongside the Alliance’s management team at Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, focusing on the Alliance’s achievements and its future development.
The meeting was attended by Ruslan Biloskurskyi, Rector of Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, as well as Taras Dobko, Rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University, Vasyl Karpusha, Rector of Sumy State University, Viktor Moshynskyi, Rector of the National University of Water and Environmental Management, and Serhii Kholod, Rector of Alfred Nobel University. Oleksandr Aziukovskyi, Rector of the National Technical University "Dnipro Polytechnic", joined the meeting online.
Over the course of two days, the participants reviewed the results of their joint work, set priorities for the coming year and discussed strategic challenges facing Ukrainian higher education.
The first day began with a tour of the Residence of the Metropolitans of Bukovina and Dalmatia. The participants then moved on to the working part of the meeting. During the session, a report on the Alliance’s activities for 2025–2026 was presented, which will soon be published on the Alliance’s website. In particular, discussions centred on the work of the international group, the veterans’ support group, the library and communications groups, as well as student initiatives.
Financial and organisational matters were considered separately, along with updates to the Alliance’s structure and the election of an executive director. Participants also discussed the Alliance’s key focus for the coming year and the handover of the coordinating role to another university. During the current period, this role has been fulfilled by Sumy State University. Details of the new thematic focus and the university that will coordinate the Alliance’s work next year will be announced shortly.
The second day was devoted to strategic sessions with experts from the Frontier Institute. We spoke with Olga Dukhnych, head of the "Demography and Migration" programme, who holds a PhD in social psychology and is a researcher specialising in socio-political processes, communities and identities, about demography as one of the main challenges facing Ukrainian higher education. We also discussed strategic university management in times of uncertainty with Yevgen Hlibovyzkyi, co-founder and CEO of the Frontier Institute, a member of the supervisory board of Ukraine’s Public Broadcasting Service and a lecturer at the Ukrainian Catholic University.
For Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, this meeting provided an important opportunity to strengthen partnerships with Ukrainian universities, exchange experiences and contribute to shaping the future of higher education together.
Cooperation and openness, a people-centred approach, quality, accountability and social responsibility — these are the values that unite the Alliance and are close to our university’s heart. It is precisely through partnership and collaboration that we can strengthen Ukrainian education and, together, respond to the challenges it faces.
