On July 10, Petro Rykhlo — distinguished scholar, translator, educator, and professor at the Department of Foreign Literature and Literary Theory of Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University — celebrates his 75th birthday.

A leading figure in Ukrainian cultural and intellectual life, Professor Rykhlo has dedicated decades to the study and promotion of German-language literature of Bukovina and Galicia, preserving the region’s multilingual heritage and placing it within the European cultural context. His research on Paul Celan is internationally recognized, and his initiatives have brought to life the Paul Celan Literary Center, the Meridian Czernowitz International Poetry Festival, and the cross-border “Bukovinian-Galician Literary Route” project.

Author of over 800 publications, Rykhlo has translated major German-language writers, including Paul Celan, Rose Ausländer, Selma Meerbaum-Eisinger, and Gregor von Rezzori, opening entire layers of Jewish-German literature to Ukrainian readers. His outstanding work has earned numerous national and international awards, including the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (2012) and the Friedrich Gundolf Prize (2024).
